Shawls

I am on a shawl roll.

I have 22 rows and a CO to finish my own Ulmus. I knitted quite a few rows of it last Saturday while managing to knit quite by myself but in public as the day demanded:

Last Wednesday I succumbed to a yarn I kept finding in different yarn shops since just before Christmas 2007. What kept attracting me to it are all those colors. Actually I think I first saw it in a bulky version and I bought the worsted one but the colors are the same, it is Misti Alpaca Hand Painted Worsted in the colorway Neruda. From some reason I can’t find my colorway on their website, maybe they don’t sell it any more.

Thursday I couldn’t resist it and started the Shawl that Jazz and I enjoy every minute of it. All those colors on my needles really make me happy:

Aren't they pretty?

On Saturday I received the very beautiful Whisper Lace Yarn in the colorway Arabian Nights I ordered from Kim of The Woolen Rabbit, this is going to be a special gift for my sister who is going to be 60 at the end of September. I  tried to take a photo of the yarn:

So Soft, So beautiful but the colors are all wrong

But couldn’t get even close to the real colors. I think the gray weather that by the way,  make me quite happy, didn’t help, although my guess is that this color will be difficult to photograph even under the best conditions. It is much darker, rich  and oh so beautiful and soft. This is going to be a very pleasurable project indeed.

Oh and I already know what I am going to knit next and yes, it is another shawl, the Milkweed Shawl by Laura Chau, I saw it on her when I visited Lettuce Knit last Wednesday and was so happy to see the published pattern on her blog the next day! I have this very same color of Casbah yarn waiting to become something lovely for me. When I bought this yarn I thought I will have to find a pattern to knit something that will not hide in my shoes most of the time and I think I just found it.

I wonder how long I will manage to resist starting this one too. I need to knit a pair of socks before I start this one, do you hear me Rachel?!?

Morning Visitor and Some FOs

A few days ago, Joe rushed me out of bed and down the stairs to see this:

A morning visitor in our back yard

He told me it is a Pileated Woodpecker, I never saw such a big woodpecker before in my life! I thought it is a weird flying chicken but I have to admit I was quite sleepy at the time. Later we heard someone drilling in the background, Joe said it is the woodpecker, I was sure some neighbour is working in his back yard.

And I am still knitting, sometimes.

While in Israel I managed to finish a shawl I knitted for my mother’s 80 birthday:

My mother and her Koigu Shawl

My mother wearing her Koigu Shawl

I had a lot of problems deciding on the pattern and yarn for this present, I started quite a few shawls; one was too lacy, the other too dark and yet another one was too warm.

In the end I settled on a simple shawl knitted in Koigu KPPPM and at long last managed to finish it before we left Israel (the 80th birthday was in January, shame on me!). Lucky for me, my mother liked it a lot and wasn’t mad at all about the lateness of the present.

During our flight back from Israel I managed to finish one of those shawls I started for my mother, I had enough yarn only for a mini shawl but I find it really useful in this time of year in Toronto:

I really like the color combination of this Noro Silk Garden Sock colorway – 252.

(Note to self: it is really useful to brush hair before modeling for photos,,,)

Meshushim – My New Knitting Obsession/Adventure

Last Sunday I started experimenting with a collection of Opal Hundertwasser Sock yarn I had in my stash for quite awhile.  Hundretwasser is one of my favorite artists, so when I first saw the Opal yarn based on his paintings I knew I must have them. Ever since the yarn entered my stash I had it in the back of my mind. I really wish I could knit something like one of Hundertwasser paintings, I know it is not possible, but a woman can dream, right?

My nephew Nir is getting married at the end of March. After finishing my Christmas knitterly obligations, I started to play with an idea to knit some kind of a wedding present for him. I searched Ravelry and came up again with Bobby’s Garden (it is in my favorites for 3 months or so) and decided it may be a good pattern for my Hundertwasser yarn.

The yellow Meshushe = משושה = Hexagon is the first one I knitted.  It is very yellow but I liked the way the colors play in the hexagon so I decided to try adding another one to it and another and another,,,

After knitting one hexagon of each colorway I have, I can tell this is going to be a very enjoyable knitting adventure.

I think I have enough yarn for about 200 hexagons. According to our calculations (Joe helped me), I will need about 400 for a queen size bed cover.
I decided to knit a few more hexagons before setting my target.

,,,, And just a week ago I was convinced I am going to knit myself a cardigan (at long last….).
